Fractional Executive Leadership
Experienced senior-level help without necessarily adding another full-time executive.
Some businesses need an advisor. Others reach a point where they need someone who can become more involved—working alongside the owner and leadership team to help move decisions into action.
Based in St. Louis, Missouri, I provide fractional executive leadership for owner-led businesses that need experienced senior-level support for a period of time without necessarily hiring another full-time executive.
The role depends on what the business actually needs.
What Fractional Leadership Can Look Like
In one company, the need may resemble a fractional COO role focused primarily on operations—how work moves through the business, where responsibilities sit, how decisions are made, and where accountability may be breaking down.
In another company, the greater need may involve sales, profitability, people, hiring, organizational development, marketing, or helping leadership implement changes that have already been identified.
When a Fractional Executive Can Make Sense
· The business needs experienced leadership but is not ready for another full-time executive.
· Growth has created operational or organizational problems that need more sustained attention.
· Too many decisions continue to depend on the owner.
· Leadership knows what needs to change but needs help carrying it through.
· An important area of the business needs stronger direction, accountability, or coordination.
· The company is going through a transition and needs experienced leadership for a defined period of time.
The objective is not to add another layer of management simply for the sake of it. It is to provide the level of senior leadership the business needs for as long as that involvement remains useful.
Advisor or Fractional Executive?
There is not always a clear dividing line.
Sometimes my role begins as a business advisor—helping the owner understand what is happening, evaluate choices, and determine priorities. As the work develops, it may become clear that more direct involvement would be useful.
Other times, the need for a fractional COO or another fractional executive role is apparent from the beginning.
The level of involvement can change as the needs of the business change.
Experience From the Owner’s Side
My perspective comes from more than four decades of industry experience, including 30 years building and operating my own successful St. Louis landscape architecture design-build company.
That experience is particularly relevant to owner-led businesses in the landscape, construction, design-build, specialty contractor, and related home-service sectors, where sales, estimating, people, operations, project execution, and profitability all have to work together.

If your business needs more than occasional advice but does not necessarily need another full-time executive, fractional leadership may be a good fit.
